Description

An 8×8 array of infrared thermal sensors makes up the AMG8833 IR 8*8 Thermal Imager Array Temperature Sensor Module. It will provide an array of 64 distinct infrared temperature measurements over I2C when linked to your microcontroller (or Raspberry Pi). It resembles the high-end thermal cameras, but it’s smaller and easier to integrate.

Thermal Imager Array Temperature Sensor Module AMG8833 IR 8*8

With an accuracy of +/- 2.5°C (4.5°F), the AMG8833 IR 8*8 Thermal Imager Array Temperature Sensor Module can measure temperatures between 0°C and 80°C (32°F and 176°F). Up to 7 metres (23 feet) are the maximum distance at which it can detect a human. Its 10Hz maximum frame rate makes it ideal for building your own tiny thermal camera or human detector. We have code to use this breakout with a Raspberry Pi running Python or an Arduino or comparable device (the sensor communicates via I2C). Using the SciPy Python package for image processing, we were able to interpolate the 8×8 grid on the Pi and obtain some quite good results.

The AMG8833 is an advancement in 8×8 thermal infrared sensors, with enhanced functionality over its AMG8831 predecessor. The sensor contains a customisable interrupt pin that can trigger when any particular pixel crosses or falls below pre-set criteria, although it only supports I2C.

We selected and mounted it on a breakout board with a 3.3V regulator and level shifting to make it simple to operate. Therefore, any 3V or 5V microcontroller or computer can use it.

Pin Description :

Power Pins:

  1. Vin – this is the power pin. Since the sensor uses 3.3V, we have included an onboard voltage regulator that will take 3-5VDC and safely convert it down. To power, the board, give it the same power as the logic level of your microcontroller – e.g. for a 5V micro like Arduino, use 5V
  2. 3Vo – this is the 3.3V output from the voltage regulator, you can grab up to 100mA from this if you like
  3. GND – common ground for power and logic

Logic pins:

  1. SCL – this is the I2C clock pin, connect to your microcontrollers I2C clock line. There is a 10K pull-up on this pin and it is level shifted so you can use 3 – 5VDC.
  2. SDA – this is the I2C data pin, connect to your microcontrollers I2C data line. There is a 10K pull-up on this pin and it is level shifted so you can use 3 – 5VDC.
  3. INT – this is the interrupt-output pin. It is 3V logic and you can use it to detect when something moves or changes in the sensor vision path.

Features:

  • 8 × 8 (64 pixels) temperature detection in two dimensions.
  • Digital output (temperature value output capabilities).
  • Small SMD package that can be mounted reflow-tolerantly.
  • RoHS compliant.
  • High-tech household appliances (air conditioners and microwaves).
  • Conserving energy at work (controlling the lighting and air conditioning).
