Description

The A4988 Stepper Motor Driver is a comprehensive micro-stepping motor driver featuring a built-in converter for seamless operation. With a voltage range of 8 V to 35 V, it can deliver up to approximately 1 A per phase without the need for a heat sink or forced air flow, while achieving a rated capacity of 2 A per coil with adequate additional cooling.

Equipped with a fixed off-time current regulator, the A4988 driver supports both slow and mixed decay modes, enhancing versatility. The integrated converter simplifies implementation, eliminating the need for phase sequence tables or high-frequency control interface programming. This makes it particularly suitable for applications where a complex microprocessor may not be available or is overloaded. During stepping operations, the A4988 utilizes chopping control to automatically select the current decay mode, resulting in reduced audible motor noise, improved step accuracy, and lower power consumption.

Internal synchronous rectification control circuitry enhances pulse width modulation (PWM) power consumption during operation, further optimizing efficiency. The driver includes internal circuit protection mechanisms such as thermal shutdown with hysteresis, under-voltage lockout (UVLO), and crossover current protection, ensuring reliable performance without requiring special power-up sequencing.

Packaged in a surface mount QFN package (ES) measuring 5 mm × 5 mm, with a nominal overall package height of 0.90 mm, the A4988 features an exposed thermal pad to enhance heat dissipation capabilities, contributing to its efficient operation.
