With the Waveshare RS485 may HAT for Raspberry Pi, your Pi may use RS485/CAN functionalities to reliably and long-distance interact with other devices.

One of the most reliable wired serial communication protocols is RS485, which can support transmissions up to 1200 metres (4000 feet) in length. On the other hand, CAN (Controller Area Network) is utilised in automobiles to provide superior noise protection.

 

Yes, this board supports bidirectional communication via CAN and RS485 protocols. Since each standard or protocol uses a distinct peripheral for communication, you can use them both at the same time. Whereas RS485 uses UART from the Raspberry Pi, CAN controllers use SPI.
