Description

A mid-drive BLDC motor rated at 60V and 1500W would provide a good balance of power and efficiency for an e-rickshaw. Here’s how you could approach using such a motor:

  1. Motor Selection: Ensure the motor is suitable for your e-rickshaw’s requirements in terms of torque, speed, and power. A 1500W motor should offer decent performance for most e-rickshaw applications.
  2. Controller: Choose a compatible motor controller capable of handling the voltage and power of the motor. Look for features such as smooth acceleration, regenerative braking, and overcurrent protection.
  3. Battery: Select a battery pack that can supply 60V to power the motor. Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used for their high energy density and power output, but ensure the battery capacity is sufficient for your desired range and performance.
  4. Drive System: Design or select a suitable drive system to transfer power from the motor to the wheels. This could involve a chain or belt drive system, depending on your specific requirements for efficiency and maintenance.
  5. Mounting and Integration: Ensure the motor can be securely mounted within the e-rickshaw frame and integrated with other components such as the pedals and transmission system. Consider factors like weight distribution and balance for optimal handling.
  6. Safety Considerations: Implement safety features such as proper insulation for electrical connections, a reliable braking system, and a kill switch for emergency situations. Ensure the e-rickshaw meets safety regulations and standards for electric vehicles.
  7. Testing and Optimization: Once the motor is installed, conduct thorough testing to ensure it performs as expected. Adjust parameters such as controller settings and gear ratios as needed to optimize performance, efficiency, and ride comfort.

What is a mid-drive motor?

Mid-drive motors are directly attached to the drivetrain and your pedaling inputs. In most cases, the drivetrain of a chain-drive electric bike is comprised of a conventional chain, chainrings, and tape, which cooperate to drive the rear wheel and move you forward.

Mid-drive motors are known for higher performance and torque when compared to a similarly powered traditional hub motor. One key motivation behind why would that be the chain drive motor drives the crank, instead of the wheel itself, multiplying its power and allowing it to better take advantage of the bike’s existing gears.

The single biggest benefit that mid-motors have over hub motors is their gear ratio. They permit the rider to drive the back tire through something very similar chain and gear set as the pedals, which means that low stuff can be chosen for driving up steep hills or accelerating from a stop with massive torque. A mid-drive motor in low gear can climb steeper hills than a hub motor of similar power and can climb hills for longer than a hub motor, which could overheat on long steep hill climbs.
