Often referred to simply as an electrolytic capacitor, an aluminium electrolytic capacitor has an electrolyte as its second electrode and aluminium metal as its first electrode. It is dielectrically coated with a very thin layer of aluminium oxide.

Often employed in power supplies and DC-DC converters, aluminium electrolytic capacitors buffer and smooth rectified DC voltages in a variety of electronic devices. Additionally, industrial power supply employ them. The anodization principle of aluminium electrolytic capacitors causes them to be polarised capacitors. They can only be used when the proper polarity of DC electricity is applied.

Typical applications of aluminum electrolytic capacitors with non-solid electrolytes are

• Decoupling capacitors at the input and output for filtering and smoothing.
  DC-link capacitors in frequency changers and variable-frequency drives for AC/AC converters.
