When you need to measure something far away or in damp conditions, it comes in quite helpful. Even at great distances, there is no signal deterioration because they are digital.

These 1-wire digital temperature sensors may provide up to 12 bits of precision from the onboard digital-to-analog converter, and they are reasonably accurate (±0.5°C throughout much of the range).

They are compatible with virtually any microcontroller that has a single digital pin; in fact, you can connect more than one to the same pin because each one is manufactured with a distinct 64-bit ID that allows for easy identification. Operates on 3.0-5.0V systems. A 4.7k resistor must be connected to the sensing pin of the microcontroller in order to pull up the data line to the VCC line.
