To find the working voltage and current output for any USB port or project, use the USB Charger Doctor. The data wires are passed by this blue plastic dongle that connects in between a USB device. The current draw is measured using a 0.05-ohm resistor that is connected in series with the power pin.

The computerised display of the doctor rapidly reads out the numbers for testing gadgets including cell phones, chargers, and cables.

This device can be powered by an input voltage range of 3.5-7VDC (most USB devices typically operate in the 4.75–5.25) and can handle up to 3A of current. About every three seconds, the readouts switch between voltage and current. It’s a highly useful tool for debugging battery chargers and boost converters, testing USB devices, and determining load levels. It is more numerical than our USB Power Gauge Mini-Kit, but it is a little chunkier. If you want to hack together your own power gauge indication, you need look into the USB Power Gauge small kit as it isn’t open source.
