A simple breakout board for the FTDI FT232RL USB to serial IC, Revision 2, is the USB TO UART TTL 5V 3.3V FT232RL Download Cable To Serial Adapter Module. For compatibility with both authentic Arduino and cloned 5V Arduino boards, this board’s pinout matches that of the FTDI cable. Moreover, conventional serial applications can make advantage of it.
The primary distinction with this board is that it exposes the DTR pin instead of the FTDI cable’s RTS pin. When a fresh Sketch is downloaded, the DTR pin enables an Arduino target to automatically reset. Having the ability to download a sketch without needing to press the reset button is a pretty great feature. Any Arduino board with the reset pin extended to a 6-pin connector will automatically be reset by this board.
The coloured wires on the FTDI cable match the pins marked BLK and GRN. On the FTDI cable, the green wire is CTS and the black wire is GND. To align the FTDI basic board with your Arduino target, use these BLK and GRN pins.
Compared to the FTDI cable, this board is slightly more user-friendly because it features TX and RX LEDs. The LEDs actually display serial communication, which you may use to check the board’s functionality.
The auto-reset feature on this board is awesome! It was created to make Arduino development less expensive and easier to use. This kind of connector is used by our LilyPads and Arduino Pro boards.
This board has a wonderful feature that lets you tune it to be either 3.3V or 5V (both IO level and power output) with a jumper on the back of the board. If you need to switch to 3.3V, you can cut the default trace and install a solder jumper. This board ships with the voltage set to 5V.
