This is a Sharp GP2Y0A21YK0F 10 to 80 cm Distance Measuring Sensor unit.

This SHARP distance sensor measures an object’s distance by reflecting infrared light off of it. The closest object’s distance can be ascertained using the analogue voltage it returns. includes a 12-inch 3-JST interface wire. These sensors work well for detection at close range. We recommend using sonar sensors for distances greater than one metre.

To operate, link the red wire to 5V, the white wire to the analogue input, and the black wire to ground. When an item is only 4′′ (10 cm) away, the analogue voltage out will be 3V; at 32′′ (80 cm), it will be 0.4V.

Note:
The manufacturer advises placing a 10 µF capacitor or greater across power and ground near the sensor to stabilise the power supply line because this sensor draws current in big, brief bursts.
